Stockholm – The beautiful and green capital of Sweden!

Stockholm, one of the most beautiful capitals in the world, is built on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. The beautiful buildings, the greenery, the fresh air and the proximity to the water are  distinctive traits of this city. Ekoparken, the first National City Park in the world, is a green space that breathes for the city, and a constant presence in the crush of the city.

The population of the city of Stockholm is approximately 800,000 (around 2 million in the Greater Stockholm area) and the Stockholm region contains more than a fifth of Sweden’s total population. The average temperature in Stockholm in November is around 0 degrees Celcius (32 degrees Fahrenheit).  

Environment oriented

Stockholm is one of the worlds most environment oriented cities; it is appointed first European Green Capital 2010 by the European Commission. The city is surrounded by no less than 219 nature reserves, the closest one is just a 10 minute subway ride from the city centre. The city has about 1,000 parks, which make up approximately 30 percent of the city’s area. Stockholm was ranked as the number one city in terms of freedom from pollution in European Cities Monitor 2006. Stockholm was also ranked the most environmental city in the magazine Readers’ Digest (July 2006) were 72 cities worldwide were ranked. Sweden is also famous for its clean water.

Transportation network

Stockholm is located at the heart of Scandinavia, with all of the region’s important cities comfortably within reach. The region has a highly developed transportation network with five airports, ferry connections to several countries around the Baltic Sea, high-speed trains to Sweden’s major cities, and excellent regional and local public transportation. At the same time, the region’s road, rail and port capacity is being expanded.

All of Stockholm’s five international airports are easily accessible from Stockholm Central station. From these one can reach all of the major cities of northern Europe in less than two hours. Arlanda airport is the largest and transports over 20 million people each year. Arlanda provides a regional transport hub with 172 destinations; over 480 direct flights arrive and depart there each day.

Rich cultural life

With its 750 year history and rich cultural life, Stockholm offers a wide selection of world-class museums and attractions. Most of the city’s attractions can be reached on foot, and there’s a good chance of experiencing a lot of things in a short time. Experience big-city life, the history of civilization and natural scenery, all in the course of the same day.

Visit Stockholm City Hall. Climb the City Hall tower for a fantastic view of Stockholm. Don’t miss Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s oldest attraction and one of the best preserved medieval city centers in the world. Walk through small winding streets lined with stores full of handicrafts, antiques, art galleries and cafés. The Royal Palace and Stockholm Cathedral are also located in Gamla Stan.

The green island of Djurgården is home to some of the city’s most popular attractions. Visit the world-famous warship the Vasa, the world’s oldest open-air museum Skansen, or Astrid Lindgren’s Junibacken. And don’t miss the chance to see Stockholm from the water. Naturally a city built on fourteen islands offers marvelous views over the water. There are many different sightseeing tours to choose from. And if fourteen islands aren’t enough, Stockholm offers a wonderful archipelago with 30,000 islands, islet rocks and skerries.
