About the Swedish National Defence College
The Swedish National Defence College, designated FHS in Swedish, has existed in its present form since 1997. The College’s roots can be traced back as far as to the Artillery College in Marieberg in Stockholm, which had been established already in the 19th century.
Today’s College constitutes the latest step of development in a long line of military educational tradition.
The College’s task is to contribute towards national and international security through research and development. Research is carried out within partly diverging subject areas and subsequently disseminated to other sectors of our society and also to other parts of the world.
The College trains and educates military and civilian personnel in leading positions, both nationally and internationally, which contributes towards the management of crisis situations and security issues.
The training and education at the College is not offered by any other university college in Sweden for the simple reason that the knowledge and skills represented here are not to be found elsewhere. It is no coincidence that teachers and professors from the Swedish National Defence College are often to be seen in the media as experts in the public debate.
Education
The Swedish National Defence College carries out instruction in mainly all military disciplines, such as: War Studies, Strategy, Military Technology and Military History. In recent years, we have also developed a number of civilian course programmes.
The SNDC has the overall responsibility for the training of senior management personnel within the Total Defence Organisation, but, as mentioned previously, we also offer courses for an increasing number of civilian students. We co-operate with a large number of authorities, companies, universities and university colleges within Sweden and abroad. Our course programmes are mainly directed towards military officers and civilian employees within the Total Defence Sector, but there are also courses available for civilian students.
Research
Research at the College is structured as a part of the process of academization and aims at creating a scientific basis, which is characteristic of academic education. The criteria for projects at the College are that they should contribute towards the scientific approach of instruction and learning and that they should be directed towards issues that are not subject to research at other university colleges and research establishments in Sweden.
At the SNDC, there is a unique command and control laboratory that supports research and exercise activities in the field of command and leadership.
